Choose a Replacement Window Style for Highest Performance

window styles Long Island New York

When your Long Island home’s windows no longer meet performance standards, you may want to upgrade to replacement windows. Choosing the right replacement window style to enhance the curb appeal of your home is important, but you also want to make sure your choices deliver the highest return on investment in other areas, too. Modern, high-quality windows look beautiful and limit noise transfer, complement unique home architecture features and reduce heating and cooling expenses. So, how do you decide which style or styles are best for your Long Island home? Read on. In this installment of the Renewal by Andersen industry standards series we cover a few style similarities and differences to ensure you choose the ideal window style for every room in your home.

Here is a brief description of each style in our portfolio.

#1. Double Hung Windows

Double Hung Windows have two movable sash so, you can open them from the top and the bottom. Benefits include:

  • Flexibility to place furniture near a window, without blocking air circulation
  • Complements nearly every architectural style home
  • Tilt-to-clean design makes cleaning easier and more convenient

#2. Casement Windows

In Casement Windows, a single sash is hinged on one side, which opens with a single lever or crank. Considered by experts as the most energy-efficient operable home window style, when large enough, this window can open fully to allow safe egress during emergencies and literally captures the breeze to usher in healthy outdoor air.

#3. Picture Windows

Picture Windows do not open. Perfect for every room where you have adequate ventilation from other windows, fixed windows boost overall energy-efficiency in your home. If there is a negative, it is that you’ll have to clean exterior surfaces from the outside, which is a bit less convenient than most high-performing operable replacement windows today.

#4. Awning windows

Like casements, Awning Windows have a single operational handle. This style has a hinge at the top of the window unit, rather than at the side. The sash opens outward, creating a mini-umbrella that channels falling rain away from your home, so you can even open the windows during a gentle rain without worrying about water damage inside.

#5. Hopper Windows

Another single-lever replacement window style, Hopper Windows open inward from a hinge positioned on the lower edge of the window unit. Hoppers are perfect for areas where an awning or casement window may interfere with traffic patterns, outdoor furniture placement or landscaping design.

#6. Sliding Windows

Also called Gliding or Gliders, Sliding Windows typically have two panels – usually both operational, but also available with one movable sash that slides over a stationary panel. You may also choose a three panel configuration with a center fixed panel that allows opening from the left and right. Sliders are usually, though not always, wider than they are tall, unlike casements which are usually taller than they are wide.

#7. Specialty Window Options

The shape of a window can have a transformational effect on the overall aesthetic of your home. Geometric shapes allow homeowners to accommodate unique structural and architectural features and draw attention to an entrance or other focal point. There are more than a dozen industry standard Specialty Windows, like circles, triangles, polygons and equal-leg arch, along with custom configurations. Some replacement window dealers also consider bay and bow windows as custom/specialty replacement windows.

Regardless of style, replacement windows built with Energy Star certified low-E glazing and gas between the panes block outside noise better and save homeowners more money on heating and cooling bills than single-pane window units.
