How to Earn a Tax Credit on Replacement Windows

Energy Star Sustained Excellence AwardThere are many aspects of replacement windows that should be taken into account when you’re considering them as a purchase. There’s the style, the number of windows, the cost, et cetera— but something you may not have taken into account is the tax credit that you could receive in addition to other benefits of replacement windows. Renewal by Andersen of Long Island offers many styles of windows that are “energy efficient” and ENERGY STAR qualified, meaning that not only can they lower your utility bills, but make you a candidate for a tax credit as well. Today, we’re going to talk about the available tax credits and what you need to know so that you’ll have the opportunity to benefit from them.

How Much Is The Tax Credit Worth & What Is Required?

The first thing that we’ll address is how much this energy efficiency tax credit is worth. The tax credit for energy efficient replacement windows is worth 10 percent of the cost of those replacement windows, up to $200. However, there are some criteria that need to be met to ensure that your replacements will qualify you for the tax credit. Pertaining to the windows themselves, the tax credit will only cover replacements that are ENERGY STAR certified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) as energy efficient, after having been manufactured by an ENERGY STAR partner. Also, the home in which the installation takes place must be your primary residence, and cannot be a new construction or a rental.

Getting More Specific about the Replacement window Qualifications

If it’s looking like you’ve met the requirements for the tax credit, and are now considering the purchase, it’s time to get into the specifics. As per the stipulations of the tax credit, the cost of the installation of the windows will not be credited — only the cost of the windows themselves. The good news however, is that you can qualify for the tax credit even if you aren’t replacing all of the windows of your home. Any window you replace with an ENERGY STAR qualified model can be credited, even your skylights.

Applying for the Replacement Window Tax Credit

The deadline for the installation of your energy efficient replacement windows is December 31, 2013. Windows installed after that date will not be applicable for the credit.
