Which Window Types Are Right for Your Home?

When you’re installing new windows in your home, it’s important to match the window style to your home’s architectural style. Windows come in all different shapes and sizes, and not all of them will look right in the house where you live.

Below, we’ve listed some of the most common architectural styles found on Long Island and the surrounding area, and we’ve suggested window types for each architectural style. It’s our hope that our suggestions will make it easier to choose the right windows for your home.

Windows for Ranch Style Homes

Ranch-style homes are single-level structures, much wider than they are tall. For this kind of home, we recommend a window that mimics the natural shape of the house. Sliding windows are wider than they are tall, so they’re a perfect fit for many ranch homes.

Sliding windows are also easy to open and close, requiring little physical strength to open the sliding panel on the window. This is a great window type if you’re hoping to age in place.

Windows for Victorian Homes

Victorian-style homes are the opposite of ranch homes in many ways: they’re tall, asymmetrical and castle-like, often featuring architectural details like rounded corner towers, witch hat turrets, dormer windows and belvederes. Victorian homes are ornate and ornamental, with beautiful craftsman details that make them a sight to behold.

For these homes, we recommend bay or bow windows. Both window types project into the yard, which in turn brings more sunlight into the home. Bay and bow windows are themselves ornamental, and thus very appropriate for a Victorian-style house.

Windows for Mid-Century Modern Homes

Mid-century modern homes are known for their flat roofs, open floor plans and minimalist facades. Windows in these homes usually have no grille patterns and large panes of glass.

Casement windows and picture windows are both an excellent addition to mid-century modern style homes because both window types look natural and attractive even without a grille pattern.
